POWELL UNITED METHODIST
CHURCH
In 1906 Methodist
services began in Garland, Wyoming. In 1909, a second congregation was
started in the Fairview school house, located nine miles southwest of
Garland. In 1914, the idea of beginning a Methodist church in Powell was
proposed by Rev. A. B. Campbell and Rev. David E. Kendall, the District
Superintendent. In 1914, Powell was a thriving community of 500. On July
10, 1914, the site of the present church, was purchased for $250.
A large tent was erected
and used for services until 1915. On July 4, 1915 the Powell United Methodist
Church was organized with 79 charter members. On September 5, the cornerstone
was laid and by October the basement was sufficiently finished to hold
services.
The first service
conducted in the completed church was April 23, 1916. A parsonage was also
built in 1916 and was located just east of the church. Wesley Hall, the
fellowship and education unit, was built in 1956. The present sanctuary was
built in 1965. The last minister to live in the parsonage was Rev. Jarrell
Tharp. The parsonage was torn down in 1977. Our present pastor, Rev. Susan
Adams-Trembath was assigned to our congregation in 2003.
Today our church
membership stands at approximately 650. We house a Headstart program and a
thrift shop, the Bargain Basement Boutique. We have an active United
Methodist Women unit, a United Methodist Men group, youth group, mid-week
bible studies and a chancel choir. We hold two services each Sunday. Our
contemporary, multi-sensory "Power-Up" service is at 9 AM; coffee fellowship
is at 11:30 AM and a traditional service at 10:30 AM. As a member of the Powell
Ministerial Association we also lend our efforts to special services and
projects like World Day of Prayer, Easter Week services, Loaves and Fishes,
the Gihon Project and the Community Service Fund.
For 90 years we have
been a part of this community. We WELCOME YOU to help us continue the
fellowship!
